SEREMBAN, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- Plus Expressways Bhd (Plus) Thursday took over management and operation of the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway from Seremban Port Dickson Highway Sdn Bhd (SPDH).
In a ceremony to mark the occasion at the Mambau Toll plaza here, Plus Managing Director, Datuk Idrose Mohamed, exchanged the take-over documents with SPDH Operations Manager, Tengku Azlan Tengku Abdullah.
Malaysian Highway Authority Director-General, Datuk George George, and Plus Chairman, Tan Sri Sheriff Kassim, witnessed the event.
Last August, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced that the government was handing over operation of the highway to Plus following SPDH's failure to make any profit.
Samy Vellu said the decision was taken because SPDH, which built the 22.75 km highway at a cost of RM248 million, failed to repay loans since August 1998.
SPDH secured a RM185 million loan and increased its investment by RM40 million while another RM27.65 million was provided by the government.
Idrose told a press conference later that Plus would study ways to attract more people to use the highway.
He said: "We will be taking several measures to improve facilities and maintenance so that we can promote the highway better, especially for visitors to Port Dickson on weekends and public holidays.
"In addition, we also need to take measures to increase traffic on normal days. At present, we were told, about 10,000 vehicles use the highway daily."
To calls for a reduction in toll rates, Idrose said Plus would maintain the existing rates.
